What is Gel Plate printing?
Gelli plate printmaking is an accessible form of monoprinting that uses a flexible, reusable gel plate to transfer paints and inks onto paper or fabric without requiring a heavy printing press.
Artists spread thin layers of acrylic paint or ink across the plate using a rubber brayer. Textures, patterns, and organic shapes are created by pressing stencils, leaves, lace, or household objects into the wet paint, or by wiping away areas to reveal negative space. Paper is then pressed firmly onto the gel surface by hand to lift the detailed impression.
Because each pull interacts with the remaining paint layers differently, every print produces a one-of-a-kind original artwork. Highly valued for its quick setup and intuitive spontaneity, gel plate printing is widely used to create fine art prints, custom stationery, and layered papers for mixed-media collages.

Amanda Chesney is passionate printmaker with 20 years of experience in multiple printmaking techniques. She has studied at the university level and taken part in residencies across the north-eastern US.
